A time of discovery

Summer of 2023 marked a time of heavy self discovery and transition for me, where I had the pleasure of studying history and design in Rome for the summer. Having recently switched to the design major, I wanted to take in as much design aboard as I could to not only enrich my education but to practice a more investigative mindset when taking in how design lived and breathed in other parts of the world. When brainstorming about ways to put to use what I experienced, I decided a cookbook would be a compelling direction.

Putting it together

The cover of the book represents a culmination of Rome's lasting characteristics that stood out to me: its traditional spirit, artistic background, and hints of modern influence. I designed four separate layouts spanning appetizers, pizzas, pastas, and dessert recipes. Each recipe seamlessly finds its place within the book while being nested within beautiful mosaics and gritty textures.

Expanding on this system, I created four separate color palettes and mosaic-pattern-inspired layouts for each section to better represent the most standout characteristics I observed. I associated many of the pizza and pasta recipes with warm colors, while desserts and appetizers received cooler tones. Finally, I created full-page illustrations for each transition section between recipe categories to better connect readers with the content on each page.

Takeaways

A Taste of Rome represented a significant milestone in my creative development, serving as my first venture into book design. I initiated this self-directed project with guidance from professors and peers, exercising both creative and professional skills simultaneously—from concept and execution to managing multiple project deadlines. Completing this cookbook solidified an important lesson: transforming lived experiences into design work creates the most authentic and compelling results. This project proved that personal passion, when channeled strategically, elevates design from functional to meaningful.
